Every year, councils across Perth’s northern suburbs require landowners to get their blocks fire-ready. From 1 November (31 October in Joondalup) your block has to meet the rules, and if it doesn’t you can be fined and billed for a contractor to do the work. Top Cut Gardening Care slashes and mows blocks across Perth’s northern suburbs to the height your council sets, and takes the cut material away the same day.
✅ We slash and mow — we don’t cut bare-earth firebreaks. See what your council requires below.
Fire-season work is about getting fuel off your block — long dry grass, weeds and clutter — and keeping it that way until the season ends.
Slashing and ride-on mowing. Long, dry grass cut down to the height your council sets, with a ride-on on open ground. Blocks that have really got away from you get a staged cut — see our overgrown block clearing.
Brushcutting edges and fence lines. We brushcut along fences, around trees, poles and sheds, and into the corners a mower can’t reach — the spots where dry grass builds up.
Green waste taken away. Cut grass, weeds and prunings are loaded and taken away on the day, so there’s no pile of dry fuel left behind. More on our green waste removal.
Regular cuts through the season. Grass keeps growing after the deadline, so we can come back on a schedule and keep your block under the limit until the season ends. For bigger properties, see our acreage mowing.
Each council sets its own dates and rules, and they depend on the size of your block. On smaller blocks, keeping the grass cut short meets the rules — and that’s exactly what we do. Here’s the short version:
✅ Big block in Wanneroo or Stirling? The firebreak there has to be bare earth, which is a job for a firebreak contractor — we can slash and mow the rest. These are summaries of each council’s current notice (Stirling’s is from 2025–26). Your council’s notice is the final word, so check it for your lot: Wanneroo · Joondalup · Stirling · Swan.
✅ Book early — every block in the area has the same deadline.

Slashing, ride-on mowing and brushcutting of house blocks, vacant lots and acreage to your council’s grass-height rules, same-day green waste removal, and regular cuts to keep it compliant until the season ends.
Bare-earth (mineral-earth) firebreaks, grading or ploughing, broadacre or paddock tractor slashing, burn-offs and tree felling — specialist jobs, and we’ll point you to the right operator.

Really pleased with Top Cut Gardening Care. From start to finish the service was excellent — they showed up when they said they would, got stuck in, and the garden looked transformed by the time they left.

It depends on your council. Joondalup wants blocks done by 31 October; Wanneroo, Swan and Stirling by 1 November. The rules then stay in place until 30 April in Wanneroo and Swan, 31 March in Stirling and 31 May in Joondalup.
On smaller blocks, keeping the grass short meets the rules: 50 mm or lower on lots under 4,047 m² in Wanneroo, below 5 cm on lots up to 2,000 m² in Joondalup, 5 cm or lower on lots under 2,000 m² in Stirling, and 10 cm or lower on lots up to 5,000 m² in Swan. Bigger blocks need firebreaks along the boundaries — in Wanneroo and Stirling those have to be bare earth. Check your council’s notice for your lot.
Councils can fine you — a $250 infringement is common and penalties go up to $5,000 — and send in a contractor to do the work at your cost.
No. We slash and mow. If your council needs a bare-earth (mineral-earth) firebreak, you’ll need a firebreak contractor for that strip — we can slash and mow the rest of the block and take the green waste away.
Yes. Grass keeps growing after the deadline, so we can come back on a regular schedule and keep it under the limit until the season ends.
Yes. Send the address and a photo or your council notice. We’ll quote from that, and we can send before-and-after photos when it’s done.
